10 Fall Maintenance Checks for Pacific Northwest Homes

If you’ve lived through even one Pacific Northwest winter, you already know the truth: around here, fall isn’t just pumpkin spice season. It’s home maintenance season. The rain is coming whether you’re ready or not, and the work you do now is what keeps a small problem from becoming an expensive one once the wet weather settles in.

Here are 10 things worth handling before the first real downpour, in no particular order.

1. Clean your gutters. Leaves are beautiful right up until they’re packed into your gutters. Clear them out now so water keeps moving away from the house all winter.
2. Get your roof checked. Look for missing shingles, moss, or damaged flashing, and do it before the rainy season is in full swing, not after.
3. Trim your trees and branches. Anything overhanging becomes a real hazard once our windstorms roll through, so a little trimming now saves you a much bigger headache later.
4. Seal your windows and doors. If you can feel a draft, your heating bill can feel it too. Replace worn weatherstripping and caulk where needed.
5. Get your fireplace serviced. If you’ve got a wood-burning fireplace, schedule the chimney cleaning before you light the first fire of the season.
6. Change your furnace filter. It’s one of the easiest things to overlook and one of the simplest ways to improve your air quality and keep the house running efficiently.
7. Check your outdoor drains. Make sure your drains and downspouts are carrying water away from the foundation, not toward it. Water management is everything in the PNW.
8. Treat moss before it spreads. Moss loves our climate, so get after it early on the roof, driveway, and walkways before it turns slippery or starts causing damage.
9. Prep your outdoor spaces. Store the patio cushions, cover the outdoor furniture, and bring any delicate plants inside before the weather turns.
10. Walk around your home. Take fifteen minutes to look at everything with fresh eyes. The small issues you catch now are far easier and cheaper to fix than they’ll be after months of rain.

Living in the Pacific Northwest means caring for your home a little differently, and a bit of preparation now can save you thousands down the road.
