Is your home ready for freezing weather? Winter can be a beautiful season, but it can also be one of the most challenging times for your home. When temperatures drop, things can go wrong fast. Pipes can freeze, heat can stop working, and minor problems can turn into big, expensive messes.
The good news is that most winter issues are easy to prevent with a few simple steps now. Here’s your easy-to-follow winter checklist with six things every homeowner should do before the cold hits.
1. Wrap your pipes and know your water shut-off. Frozen pipes are one of the biggest problems in winter. When water freezes, it expands and can burst the pipe, causing a flood inside your home. To avoid this, wrap any visible pipes, especially those outside or in the garage. Foam pipe covers, or old towels and tape, can do the trick.
Make sure you know where your main water shut-off is. If a pipe does break, shutting off the water fast can save you thousands of dollars.
2. Seal the drafts around windows and doors. Take a walk around your home and check for cold air coming in through gaps in windows or doors. Use weatherstripping or caulking to seal them. Even a rolled-up towel placed at the base of a drafty door can make a big difference. You’ll be warmer and save money too.
3. Check your heater before it gets too cold. Turn on your home’s heater now and listen for any strange sounds. Make sure the filters are clean, and nothing is blocking the vents. If something seems off, call a pro to check it out. A warm home is a safe home.
4. Clean your gutters to avoid water damage. When leaves clog your gutters, water can freeze, forming ice dams. This can push water under your roof or into your walls. That’s not good. Clean your gutters and make sure water drains away from your house. It’s a simple job that can protect your roof, your foundation, and your peace of mind.
5. Get ready for power outages. Keep flashlights, batteries, warm blankets, and even a backup power source on hand. If you rely on electricity for heat, talk to an expert about your options. Being ready helps you stay calm and safe if the lights go out.
6. Test your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. More heating means more risk of fire or carbon monoxide leaks. Make sure your smoke detectors and carbon monoxide alarms are working. Press the test button and replace the batteries if needed. These devices save lives and are one of the easiest things to check.
Don’t wait until something breaks this winter. Take care of these six simple tasks now and enjoy the season without worry.
